When should I close a vacancy?

Know when to close instead of deleting vacancies

To close a vacancy, click on the three dots next to job title, then select ‘Close’ from the drop-down menu. Closing a vacancy removes it from your career site, but keeps it in Sterndesk. There are two main reasons why you should close a vacancy:

  1. When deleting the vacancy is not an option. If applicants have already responded to the vacancy, deleting it is no longer possible. This is to protect applicant data, as deleting the vacancy would also remove all related information.
  2. If you plan to use the vacancy again in the future. If you want the vacancy to be temporarily hidden, or if you need it hidden but still want to access or reuse the text later, closing it is the best option. The vacancy will remain stored in Sterndesk, allowing you to reopen it whenever needed without rewriting the job post. To make it visible again, simply click ‘Open’, which will replace the ‘Close’ option once the vacancy is closed.

Why Closed Jobs Remain Accessible to Candidates

When a job is marked as closed:

  1. Removed from General Visibility: The job is no longer accessible through browsing, search results, or pagination on the careers site. This ensures that candidates focus on actively open positions.
  2. Direct Link Accessibility: While not visible in general navigation, closed job postings remain accessible via a direct link. This allows candidates who have bookmarked or previously shared the link to confirm the job's status, ensuring transparency and preventing confusion.
  3. Google Optimization: Keeping closed jobs accessible by direct link supports search engine optimization. Removing them entirely could disrupt our site's rankings and visibility, which benefits all job postings.
  4. Smooth Transition Period: It may take some time for the job to fully transition to this state, ensuring consistency across systems without impacting user experience.

By balancing these practices, we ensure a transparent and optimized platform that serves both candidates and clients effectively.
